Florence Pugh Is Cathy Ames: Everything to Know about Netflix’s “East of Eden,” Premiering October 1

Steinbeck fans, mark your calendars. Netflix’s long-awaited limited series adaptation of East of Eden finally has a release date, and it’s closer than you think: all seven episodes drop October 1, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.

This isn’t just another literary adaptation; it’s a passion project nearly four years in the making, led by a filmmaker with deep personal ties to the material, and anchored by a performance that early buzz suggests could be one of the year’s most talked-about.

The Story: A Family Saga, Reframed Around Its Most Dangerous Woman

Steinbeck’s 1952 novel is a sprawling, multigenerational epic set in California’s Salinas Valley, tracing the entwined fates of the Trask and Hamilton families across roughly fifty years, from the Civil War through the end of World War I.

At its core is a modern echo of the Cain and Abel story: brothers locked in rivalry, fathers who withhold their love, and children left to inherit the sins of the generation before them.

But where Elia Kazan’s celebrated 1955 film (the one that made James Dean a star) focused narrowly on the book’s final act, this new series takes a far more ambitious approach. Netflix’s official logline describes it as a “modern interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece” that will “explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”

That shift in focus is the whole point. As one outlet put it, the series “explores the timeless story of good & evil through the multigenerational saga of the Trask family and its chilling, indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”

Enter Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames

Florence Pugh takes on the role of Cathy Ames, the manipulative, magnetic figure who marries into the Trask family and reshapes its destiny for generations. Netflix describes her arc as one that becomes intertwined with the men of the Trask family, particularly Adam and Charles, as they all navigate “the darker side of the California dream.”

Pugh is also serving as an executive producer on the project, and according to writer and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan, there was never a backup plan for who would play her. Kazan told Netflix’s Tudum, “I didn’t have a backup. I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy.”

Kazan didn’t hold back on her admiration for Pugh’s process, either, describing watching her work on set for five months and coming away without fully understanding how she does it, only that the results speak for themselves.

A Family Legacy, Reinterpreted

A fascinating generational thread runs behind the camera, too.

Zoe Kazan is the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, the director behind the 1955 film.

In interviews, she’s been candid that her grandfather’s movie only skimmed the surface of Steinbeck’s novel, telling Vanity Fair she was “really surprised by how loose an interpretation” the 1955 film was, since some of her favorite characters from the book were marginalized or cut entirely.

Her version aims to correct that, restoring characters like Lee, the Chinese American valet and moral center of the Trask household, largely absent from the original film, and giving Cathy Ames the full, complicated interiority Steinbeck gave her on the page.

Meet the Cast

The series brings together an impressive ensemble:

  • Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames
  • Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Cathy’s husband
  • Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Adam’s brother
  • Hoon Lee as Lee
  • Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask
  • Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton
  • Martha Plimpton as Faye
  • Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, Cathy and Adam’s son
  • Joe Anders as Aron Trask, Cal’s twin brother

Behind the camera, Garth Davis directs episodes one through four, with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre taking episodes five through seven.

Kazan co-showruns alongside Jeb Stuart, with the two of them and Pugh among the executive producers.

Why This Adaptation Feels Different

Where the 1955 film compressed Steinbeck’s sprawling novel into the story of teenage brothers Cal and Aron, this series is structured to give the full three-generation arc room to breathe across seven episodes, which means more Cyrus Trask, more Samuel Hamilton, more of the brothel-owner Faye who takes Cathy in, and, crucially, far more Cathy Ames herself.

Kazan has described her guiding principle as staying true to the spirit of the book even while modernizing the telling, saying Steinbeck’s own words, “personal, shocking, profound, and free,” are what have kept her enthralled with the material since she first read it as a teenager.

When and Where to Watch

East of Eden premieres Thursday, October 1, 2026, with all seven episodes releasing at once on Netflix… perfect for a weekend binge.

Given the pedigree involved: Pugh fresh off major awards buzz, Kazan behind the camera reimagining her own family’s cinematic legacy, and a cast stacked with prestige-drama regulars, this is shaping up to be one of the fall’s must-watch limited series for anyone who loves a good period drama with teeth.
