7 Hidden Gems on Netflix You’ll Regret Not Watching

Searching through Netflix to find the perfect thing to watch, can be a chore in itself. It can be so overwhelming to go through all the series being promoted on the main page, yet find nothing that actually gets your attention. But to find the hidden gems on Netflix, you have to dig a little deeper.

But if you’re not in the mood to do that, here is a list of some of the most underrated shows and movies on Netflix. It’s curated to have a wide variety of genres, so there’s something here for everyone!

1. When The Camellia Blooms

K-Dramas get a lot of flack for playing up tropes, but When The Camellia Blooms couldn’t be farther from that. Dong-Baek is a single mother who opens a bar in said small town and tries to settle her roots amidst judgment from the townsfolk.

But she also finds herself caught up in a murder mystery, all the while trying to balance her past and open herself up for the future. When The Camellia Blooms is a beautiful deviation from other romance K-dramas.

2. One Day At A Time

If you’re in the mood for a quirky sitcom, look no further than One Day At A Time. One Day At A Time follows an oddball Hispanic family led by a single mother, Gloria. And on paper, it’s a simple, lovable comedy.

But some of the issues that it deals with are much more hard-hitting, like the PTSD of war veterans like Gloria, how to be accepting of your queer children, and being second-generation immigrants. It’s a great little show that deserved a lot more hype.

3. Cunk On Earth

Cunk On.. is a mockumentary series that stars comedian Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk, an investigative journalist who asks real, important people some very insane questions. The comedy is in the fact that she meets these specialists in their fields, and they fully believe they are sitting down for a serious interview.

That is until she opens her mouth. Diane’s deadpan delivery is what sells the series as one of the best comedy features to date.

Not currently available in the United States.

4. iZombie

There are very few shows that still hold up and iZombie is one of them. Originally a loose adaptation of a comic series by the same name, iZombie took on a life of its own with solid acting and a quirky setting.

Live Moore, the main protagonist, is a medical examiner turned zombie who helps solve crimes by eating the victim’s brains and parsing through their memories.

All the while she has to hide her zombie existence from the people around her. With 5 seasons under its belt, iZombie is a true hidden gem.

5. Echoes

Echoes was, by far, one of the most well-executed mystery series on Netflix.

Yet it came and went without much fanfare, despite starring names like Matt Bomer and Michelle Monohagan. The idea of two twins so intertwined that they’d continuously play pranks pretending to be one another, only for one to go missing? It was an intriguing premise.

6. My Happy Marriage

For a supernatural anime so heavyhanded on romance, you’d think My Happy Marriage would be dominating the charts.

My Happy Marriage is a retelling of the classic Cinderella story, with a girl who went unappreciated until she is engaged to a supposedly monstrous man, who turns out to be nothing short of Prince Charming. The chemistry and earnest romance between the main characters set it apart from other romance anime out there.

7. Kim’s Convenience

Most people know Simu Liu from his Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. But real fans know him as the estranged son of Mr Kim on the Canadian series, Kim’s Convenience.

But Kim’s Convenience is so much more than that. A brilliant show about the struggles of immigrant families and the disconnect between generations, Kim’s Convenience is simultaneously relatable and comedic.
