Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m late to the Off-Campus party. Amazon Prime’s college hockey romance has been on my radar for a while, and I finally sat down to watch it. Verdict? It’s swoony, it’s fun, and yes, I’m already thinking about Dean and Allie’s story in season 2.
But let’s break it down, because as a period drama girlie at heart, I came into this one with a very specific lens.
The Fake Dating Trope, Modernized

Off-Campus leans on one of romance’s most beloved tropes: fake dating. And look, I’m a sucker for fake dating in a Regency ballroom; there’s something about the stakes of reputation and society that makes it really angsty.
In a modern college setting, though? The stakes just don’t hit quite as hard for me. There’s no risk of social ruin here the way there would be for, say, a Bridgerton miss caught in a compromising position.
Honestly, I found myself wishing the setup had gone a different direction. Garrett paying Hannah to tutor him would’ve made just as much narrative sense (they’re both in college, after all!) and might’ve given the will-they-won’t-they even more believable tension. But hey, I’m not the one adapting a beloved book, so I’ll leave that note in the suggestion box.
A Hockey Show… Again

Is anyone else noticing how many hockey romances are out there right now? I’m not exactly a hockey girl, but credit where it’s due. The hockey subplot in Off-Campus works. It gives Garrett’s world texture without ever feeling like it’s hijacking the main romance, which is a nice balance.
Dark Backstories, Light Storytelling

One thing Off-Campus does really well: both Hannah and Garrett are carrying genuinely heavy backstories, and the show doesn’t shy away from treating that seriously. But, and this is the part I appreciated most, it never tips into “too much to handle” territory. It’s a real skill to sit with hard things and still keep the overall tone feel-good, and this show pulls it off.
Dean and Allie Are Stealing My Heart

Dean and Allie got a solid, satisfying chunk of screen time this season without ever overshadowing Hannah and Garrett’s arc, and honestly? I’m already counting down for their story to take the lead. Season 2 is officially confirmed, and I am there for it.
The Verdict

I loved Hannah and Garrett. I’m just not obsessed with them the way I am with some of my other favorite couples. The chemistry is sweet, but it doesn’t quite reach that can’t-stop-thinking-about-them level for me. Still, this is a genuinely enjoyable, easy-to-binge romance with heart, humor, and just enough angst to keep things interesting.
One small note for anyone hitting play: there’s full frontal male nudity in this one, so heads up if that’s not your thing.
TLDR: If you love a good modern romance with real emotional depth, then Off-Campus is a great weekend binge. It’s not going to dethrone my favorite escapist period dramas, but it’s a fun, swoony watch that earns its spot on the watchlist.
Have you watched Off-Campus? Are you Team Hannah & Garrett or already manifesting Dean & Allie’s season 2 storyline? Let me know!
