Netflix confirmed the return of its hit period drama at its May 13 upfront presentation, promising a landmark chapter for the beloved franchise.
Netflix announced at its May 13 upfront presentation that Bridgerton season five will arrive on the streamer in 2027. The news marks a milestone for the series: it will be the first time since the show’s 2020 debut that less than two years will have passed between installments, with season four having debuted just this past January.
The upcoming season centers on Francesca Bridgerton, the family’s introverted middle daughter, played by Hannah Dodd. Two years after the death of her beloved husband John, Francesca decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. Her resolve is tested, however, when John’s cousin Michaela — played by Masali Baduza — returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate. Francesca’s complicated feelings force her to question whether to hold to her pragmatic intentions or follow her inner passions.
Season five is breaking new ground for the show in more ways than one. Showrunner Jess Brownell offered a preview of the emotional and narrative ambition behind the new storyline in a March interview with Netflix’s Tudum.
“More than ever, season five is going to be about yearning,” Brownell said. “It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means.”
With four seasons already to its name, Bridgerton has established itself as one of Netflix’s flagship properties. Season five looks set to push the series into new territory — both in its accelerated production timeline and in the story it chooses to tell.
