12 TV Shows That Have the Most Insufferable Characters of All Time

A great TV show can be ruined by characters you can’t stand. And we’re not talking about anti heroes or ones that you’re meant to hate, no. These are the annoying ones that you’re meant to like. Since misery loves company we rounded up 12 television shows that have the most insufferable characters of all time.

If you relate to one of these popular TV characters you might want to think about what that means…

How many of these do you agree with?

Glee

I’m an OG Glee fan so this one hits home. I mean any glee club kid is going to be annoying, it’s true, but as the series went on the characters seemed to get more and more insufferable. Which is a shame because it started out pretty decent.

It seemed that Rachel was probably the most hated of the bunch, with one person saying: “Rachel Berry was the reason I stopped watching the show.”

Emily in Paris

Most people agreed that the main character of Emily in Paris, Emily, is the most insufferable of the bunch. Others argued Paris is also annoying – which is just funny.

Any Reality TV Show

A lot of reality shows came up, especially The Real Housewives and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I do think that, unlike many of the other shows on this list, it’s the insufferable nature of these people that makes us drawn to reality TV – if they weren’t awful it would just be boring peoples’ lives.

Caillou

Yeah, this one is pretty much a given. Caillou is the worst character on Caillou, but honestly I find his parents (and their infinite patience/permissive parenting) equally horrid.

The show’s critics were even more harsh, with one saying “Hate that little leukemia having crybaby.” to which someone else replied with, “It’s not leukemia, he’s just so insufferable that he didn’t deserve hair.”

Hard to believe a show for preschoolers can evoke such strong emotions!

Everybody loves Raymond

I used to watch this show a fair bit when it was on the air and totally agree that so much of the cast is horrible. Of course I kind of thought that was the point, but as an adult I realize that we were actually supposed to like Ray Romano in his show.

The Big Bang Theory

Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Jim Parsons, Melissa Rauch, and Kunal Nayyar in The Big Bang Theory (2007).

Are you mad about seeing this on the list or mad you had to scroll so far to find it? As a nerd, I personally despise The Big Bang Theory; all the characters are insufferable harmful stereotypes.

On top of that, there are so many cases of writing that don’t just make the characters “loveable nerds” but truly awful human beings, especially through their interactions with women.

Gilmore Girls

If you couldn’t get into Gilmore Girls because you hated the main character Rory join the club. This one comes up a lot in a lot of “most hated shows” lists and I think the way the characters are written and acted is a huge part of that.

Sex and the City

Another female focused show that loses a lot of its audience because of bad writing. Most people agree that Carrie is the worst but they’re all pretty bad… Except Samantha. She’s ok.

Friends

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Noelle Sheldon, and Cali Sheldon in Friends (1994).

There’s a few characters on Friends that you’re kind of supposed to hate like Ross, but a lot of people find the entire cast annoying. I guess it’s one of those shows that you either like or you don’t!

How I Met Your Mother

Have you met Ted? No really, have you met him because he’s completely insufferable. Long before the show disappointed us with one of the worst endings ever it had a cast of characters that were completely insufferable.

Neil Patrick Harris has addressed how horrible his sexist character Barney was on the show, but the real best of the worst in HIMYM was definitely the main character.

7th Heaven

of your take on the religious aspects of this show (and the awful writing) most people agree that the characters in 7th Heaven were horribly self righteous jerks.

Yellowstone

The most controversial take on this list but I had to include it because so many people hated the characters in Yellowstone! So much so they couldn’t get into it. While some adore the series, critics felt the characters were too dysfunctional (and not in a fun way) and the dynamics felt more like a soap opera than a serious show.
