12 Underrated Movies To Watch During The Winter Storm

Every time you look up movie recommendations or talk to your friends the same picks seem to come up over and over again. That’s great, but sometimes you want something different – which is why I tracked down these underrated movies that you’ve probably never heard of.

Unheard of, yes, but definitely underrated. And totally worth checking out at your next movie night.

If this number rings a bell you might have heard of this film, but more likely know it from the Stephen King book it’s based on. Starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, 1408 is a psychological thriller about an author who’s investigating haunted locales.

While it did do well when it came out (including positive reviews), it was largely forgotten about and omitted from the cultural zeitgeist. Which makes it a great example of an amazing movie lots of folks haven’t heard of.

Hell or High Water

Another one that was critically acclaimed, Hell or High Water is about a divorced dad in Texas who’s trying to make a better life for his son. Struggling and about to lose the family ranch, he teams up with his ex-con brother to rob the bank that’s foreclosing on his land.

Fans of horror and westerns will appreciate the way those themes are blended in this smart and creepy cannibal movie. While underrated when it came out, it’s now a cult classic with a small but avid fan community.

“One of the best / most underrated horror movies of the last 25 years” one fan praised.

Definitely an underrated movie, Arlington Road is something that’s as poignant to watch today as it was when it came out in 1999. If you haven’t heard of it, this movie plays on the fears of the far right attacks of the time like Waco, the Oklahoma City bombing, etc.

Alpha Dog

You might not have heard of Alpha Dog but you’ve definitely heard of most, if not all, of the cast who stars in it. Don’t skip it because it stars Justin Timberlake; Alpha Dog is thrilling, even more so because it’s based on a true story.

The Cell

Sometimes called one of the weirdest movies ever, The Cell has been described as “a work of art” by the people who love it. Be warned: it’s creepy and disturbing, even earning itself a nomination for best makeup at the Academy Awards.

The Gift

This is probably one of Jason Batemen’s best roles and so many people haven’t heard of it! The Gift is a psychological thriller with plenty of twists – none of which I’m about to spoil here. Go watch it!

Identity pulls from Agatha Christie’s book And Then There Were None to tell the story of ten strangers who find themselves stranded in a Nevada motel. Then they start getting murdered.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is certainly up there when it comes to absolutely terrifying horror movies. “It’s one of those that you wish that you hadn’t seen so you could watch it for the first time.” one of its fans said.

So I guess if you haven’t seen it yet make sure you enjoy it!

The Postman

I love The Postman but it feels like no one else has heard of this post-apocalyptic Kevin Costner film. Granted, a lot of critics saw this one as a failure, but in my opinion (and that of a lot of people online) it’s way underrated!

Wind River

A fan said Wind River was “as good a Modern Western that’s been made.” It stars Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye in the Marvel movies) as a wildlife officer who finds the body of a young woman in an Indian reserve. He then acts as a guide to help the FBI investigate.

I feel like everyone forgot this movie existed but it was a fantastic period piece about a murderer who’s obsessed with capturing the elusive scent of a young woman. How does he get it? You guessed it, murdering.
