12 of the Most Annoying TV Show Characters of All Time, According to the Internet

There are plenty of characters on TV that just plain irks you, but a few are written so irritating that it actively detracts from the show.

We tracked down some fan answers with what they thought the most annoying TV show characters of all time were and these were some of the most popular answers.

A few characters were written annoying on purpose but others seem to be the victim of bad writing or poor acting.

Either way, they sure make some of these shows hard to watch!

Rachel Berry – Glee

There are plenty of annoying characters on Glee even if you consider yourself a fan of the series, but most agree that Rachel is the most irritating. Some folks didn’t like her writing, others felt the actor was annoying with her delivery. Either way she drives us nuts!

Carrie Bradshaw – Sex in the City

It’s no secret that Sex in the City is a hugely popular show and even folks who aren’t interested in it are at least somewhat familiar with the characters. While the cast isn’t all bad, there’s something about Carrie that really rubs viewers the wrong way.

In some cases, that something was the writing – especially the way she guilted another character, Charlotte, for money.

Piper Chapman – Orange Is the New Black

This was a heated disagreement between which OITNB character is more annoying: Piper or Dayna. As a main character you’d think Piper would be more likeable but she manages to annoy the hell out of both the other characters and the viewer.

Dawson Leery – Dawson’s Creek

So many things that were annoying about this teen after school soap opera character! Even worse, the actor who’s fame hinged on this role has recently made headlines with his ultra conservative political views.

Ezra Fitz – Pretty Little Liars

The consensus as to why Ezra is awful was pretty clear: he tried to groom one of his students into a relationship. Looking back, this show was pretty problematic in a lot of ways – and characters like this just aren’t acceptable on TV.

Vanessa Abrams – Gossip Girl

Some characters really made the show great in Gossip Girls but others, like Vanessa, managed to ruin so many situations. She sometimes seemed to be written just as an annoying plot device – which of course makes her one of the most annoying TV show characters of all time.

Jughead – Riverdale

If you dislike this show then you could easily argue all the characters annoy you, but in this case even fans agree that Jughead can be insufferable at times.

Lynette – Desperate Housewives

Another show where pretty much everyone is awful, but in this case it’s by design. Still, Lynette drove us crazy while watching Desperate Housewives. Especially the way she seemed to always get away with doing horrible things.

Ted Mosby – How I Met Your Mother

Haaave you met Ted? If not, you’re in for whatever the opposite of a treat is. Like a punishment, really. If you go back to this hit show it’s easy to see how all the other characters carried it while Ted was insufferable.

Sheldon Cooper – The Big Bang Theory

Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Jim Parsons, Melissa Rauch, and Kunal Nayyar in The Big Bang Theory (2007).

Bazinga! It’s no surprise to see Sheldon Cooper on this list, especially with how his character was written during the later seasons. Since the show’s producers have come out and said he’s not odd because of neurodivergent traits it’s fair game to criticize how annoying and demanding Sheldon is.

Ross Geller – Friends

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Noelle Sheldon, and Cali Sheldon in Friends (1994).

This one’s been going on a long, long time – fans of Friends have always considered Ross to be the least desirable character. He’s often manipulative towards his friends

Amy Juergens – Secret Life of the American Teenager

Every character in this show is pretty insufferable but Amy manages to shine as the worst of the worst. The only saving grace here is the actor who played her has recently said she didn’t agree with the direction the show went.
