The 12 Best (And Weirdest) Old Adult Swim Shows You Need to Watch

If you enjoy Adult Swim shows and want to catch up some classics this list is a great place to start! I rounded up some of the best weird old Adult Swim shows – and unless you’re an avid fan I’ll bet there’s a few you’ve never heard of.

Since this is about older shows that you haven’t seen, I intentionally excluded ones like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Venture Bros. that were both still on the air until recently and pretty well-known.

The show that started it all! Without Space Ghost Coast to Coast there’d be no Adult Swim; this is where it got its start.

This adult comedy took footage from the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon Space Ghost then re-cut and re-dubbed it to create a new late-night style talk show.

It first aired in the mid-90s, then was rebooted in 2001 for the new Adult Swim programming black that launched that year.

Sealab 2021

Similar to Space Ghost, Sealab 2021 cut footage from the old (and almost unheard of) 70s cartoon Sealab 2020. The result was a parody show that, in my opinion, was one of the funniest shows that Adult Swim ever made.

By the same creators as Sealab 2021, this hilarious Adult Swim show sadly only aired for two seasons before being cancelled. It stars Killface, an evil villain who’s trying to dodge his nemesis (a billionaire vigilante) and raise his awkward teenage son.

Metalocalypse

Even though Metalocalypse managed to stay on TV for 4 seasons it was still criminally under appreciated by most people.

Featuring the heavy metal band Deatklok, the show ends up being the most hilarious juxtaposition of the band’s day-to-day antics (where they are all clueless and immature) and their world-wide fame that includes concerts where many fans die.

It’s dark and so very funny, which isn’t surprising considering it was made by Brendan Small, who also made Home Movies.

Another feature of the original Adult Swim programming block, Home Movies was an adult comedy series created by Brendan Small and Loren Bouchard. Small went on to create Metalocalypse, while Bouchard would eventually create the hit show Bob’s Burgers .

As for the show, it follows an 8 year old aspiring filmmaker and his two friends. No, it’s not a show for kids.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law

We really need to give Space Ghost Coast to Coast more credit than it gets because it gave us so many shows; Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law included. Harvey Birdman was a character in an old show called Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, but now he’s a lawyer.

Most of his clients come from old Hanna-Barbera cartoons too including Shaggy & Scooby-Doo, Fred Flinstone, and Boo-Boo Bear.

The Brak Show

Last rebooted old superhero show, I promise! The Brak Show is a lot like Aqua Teen Hunger Force in both the comedy style and level of surrealism. Sadly it wasn’t nearly as successful as Aqua Teen, though.

Who is Brak, exactly? He’s the villain (and, spoiler alert, companion) from the old Space Ghost cartoons and was also featured on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The show also includes Zorak, an anthropomorphic giant praying mantis that’s also from Space Ghost as well as a few original characters.

Assy McGee

No, this isn’t one of the shows you see made up on Rick and Morty’s Interdimensional Cable, it’s a real show that was greenlit on Adult Swim. Assy McGee is, well you guessed it, a butt. With legs. And a gun.

Like most stereotypical cop shows from the 70s and 80s Assy is a bit of an alcoholic and is both depressed and trigger-happy.

Mike Tyson Mysteries

Are you even a Mike Tyson fan if you haven’t seen his iconic Adult Swim show? Would you be more surprised to learn that it ran for 4 seasons from 2014 through 2020?

This cartoon solves other mystery solving series like Scooby-Doo and Johnny Quest, but for an adult audience. If you’re used to some of the tamer Adult Swim shows you’ll find this one a little more mature.

Xavier: Renegade Angel

I had to include this one because it’s just so weird. The animation style of Xavier: Renegade Angel makes it look like it’s out of a PS1/PS2 era game.

Another incredibly offensive show compared to most Adult Swim series, there’s two hilarious seasons of this odd series out there to enjoy.

The Boondocks

You might have heard of The Boondocks before, but if you haven’t seen the show this is your reminder to stream old episodes or catch some reruns. Especially since the planned HBO reboot of the series has been cancelled.

The Boondocks has won several awards over its 4 seasons including one from the NAACP and a Peabody Award.

Originally started as a comic strip in the late 90s, The Boondocks is about a Black family who moves into a mostly White suburban neighborhood.

Tom Goes to the Mayor

Created by the comedy duo Tim and Eric (who also had a live action show on Adult Swim) alongside Bob Odenkirk ( Better Call Saul), Tom Goes to the Major is a show that people either loved or hated when it came out.

The animation style is super weird but if you can get past that the dark humor and celebrity appearances make for some great animated TV.
