If you think you’re strong and stoic think again because I’ve rounded up 12 movies that will make even the toughest person cry. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Some of these are certifiable tragedies that will have you reaching for the tissue box, while others catch you off guard and leave you a sobbing mess. Enjoy! (Or don’t?)

Dear Zachary

If you haven’t heard of this one it’s not really a movie, but more of a documentary. It was created to tell the story (and memorialize) the tragic murder of a boy named Zachary who was killed by his mother. All while his father, who couldn’t gain custody, was powerless to intervene.

You can increase the effectiveness of this movie making even the toughest person cry by not telling them what the film is about. It starts off as a loving, feel-good period comedy that quickly descends into tragedy as the father and his son are taken to a concentration camp during World War 2.

Bridge to Terabithia

It’s a family movie that will get you when you least expect it. While folks who have read the book might be able to hold back tears, anyone who isn’t familiar with the story is in for a shock.

Grave of the Fireflies

Often considered to be one of the saddest movies ever made, Grave of the Fireflies is an animated movie that tells the story of two Japanese children trying to survive after their town was firebombed during the war and they become separated from their parents.

Schindler’s List

I mean really, if you don’t know how sad Schindler’s List is by now then are you even a movie fan at all? Assuming someone hasn’t seen it there’s no doubt this emotional World War 2 drama will make even the toughest people in your life cry, but I’m pretty sure most of us would still shed a tear or two re-watching it too.

Coco

You might not think Disney and making tough people cry go together but Coco definitely fits this description. If you haven’t seen this 2017 Disney/Pixar film check it out (even as an adult). While it’s something that can make anyone feel teary-eyed towards the end, Coco‘s story is especially touching for folks with kids.

Dancer in the Dark

A struggling single mother is going blind – and so is her son. As she struggles to save money for the operation that will save her child’s eyesight (ignoring her own struggles) everything seems to be going wrong to undo her hard work. This eventually builds to an ending that will have even the most stoic people reaching for the tissues.

The Green Mile

I think one of the reasons The Green Mile has stayed with us is because of how emotional and sad it is. Not only is it great if you need a cry, but also a fantastic movie on its own merit!

Let’s just say you shouldn’t watch this one if you’ve recently lost a parent.

If you read the description for Aftersun it doesn’t sound too emotional, which is part of what makes this one so cry-worthy: it catches you totally off guard. An indie film that premiered at Cannes, you might not have heard of it but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a cry.

Click

Another one that gets you because you aren’t expecting it, Click is an Adam Sandler movie that most people assumed would be a comedy like his other films. While it is funny, Click’s emotional “message” is one that almost anyone can relate to in our busy modern world.

Manchester by the Sea

It’s no wonder Manchester by the Sea is often regarded as one of the saddest movies out there. The entire story is built on tragedy; it’s about a man who is caring for his nephew after his brother dies.
