Borat!
The full title is actually Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Sacha Baron Cohen plays Borat, a fictional journalist traveling the U.S. to make a documentary based on interactions with people he meets. Adding to the hilarity is that many interviewees are unaware that Borat is an actor and that they’re being satirized.
Dumb & Dumber
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play two dumb friends who mean well. They’re traveling from Rhode Island to Colorado to return money they think was mistakenly abandoned but actually was meant for ransom.
Scary Movie
Some slasher films are so bad that they’re pretty funny, but here, we have a slasher film parodying slasher films. You’ll see references to plenty of well-known horror films.
Airplane
This spoof of disaster films is commonly regarded as the funniest movie of all time. Many liked it even better on home video because they realized there were jokes they’d missed in the theater because so many people were laughing so loudly.
The Naked Gun
Eight years after Airplane, Leslie Nielsen starred in yet another comedy classic. This one is a satire of cop/detective movies, and Nielsen is an inept detective working to foil a plot to assassinate the Queen of England.
Idiocracy
After a government hibernation experiment goes wrong, a man wakes up 500 years later in an America where everyone has become stupid because of technology. Some fans darkly suggest that the movie was cannily predictive.
Young Frankenstein
Gene Wilder co-wrote and starred in this Mel Brooks parody of classic horror films, especially the Frankenstein ones. Brooks considers it his best film, though not his funniest. He gives that nod to…
Blazing Saddles
This parody of the Western genre is more than merely hilarious. The Library of Congress has declared it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and the movie has been preserved in the National Film Registry.
Spaceballs
Another Mel Brooks classic that never fails to entertain is this spoof of the Star Wars franchise, with a nod to Planet of the Apes at the end and to Alien near the beginning. The whole cast, which includes John Candy and a young Bill Pullman, is great, but Rick Moranis steals the show as Dark Helmet.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Capella International.
A spy-genre satire that largely spoofs the James Bond franchise, this film also parodies elements of 1960s popular culture. Powers (Mike Myers) is a spy trying to thwart his arch-nemesis, Dr. Evil.
National Lampoon’s Vacation

Chevy Chase stars in the road trip comedy about a family trip where just about everything that can go wrong does. It was also the acting debut of supermodel Christie Brinkley, unforgettable in her red Ferrari.
Caddyshack
Stand-up comedian Rodney Dangerfield was always great in films, and many consider this golf comedy to be his best performance. The other notable performance is by Bill Murray, who plays a groundskeeper obsessed with exterminating a troublesome gopher.
The Blues Brothers
John Belushi and Dan Akroyd play two musician brothers on a “mission from God” to save the orphanage in which they grew up. Along the way, their mission becomes a full-fledged pursuit involving the police, neo-Nazis, and more. In addition to the laughs, the movie also has a great soundtrack that has actual numbers by famous performers like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, and others.
Animal House

Tragically, John Belushi died at 33, but this was another classic comedy he left behind for us to enjoy. The movie follows the antics of an unbelievably irresponsible fraternity on a prestigious college campus. Not enjoying this film might land you on “double secret probation.”
