As we grow older, our tastes often change, and movies are no exception. Maybe when you were a kid or young adult, there was a movie you couldn’t get enough. Then when you were older, you came to cringe at it. Here are some examples that come up a lot.
Zoolander
This movie still makes you laugh, but it’s also really stupid. In its defense, though, it’s supposed to be stupid.
The Beastmaster
A 1982 fantasy action film, this movie had a lot going for it in trailers. If you watch it now, it might come across as having a slow pace, boring plot, and bad acting.
Beethoven
As a kid, you naturally cheered for the furry hero of this film. As an adult, though, you kind of have to wonder who thought it was a good idea to make a film about a veterinarian who murders dogs.
The Mighty Ducks
Movies about underdogs winning it all are usually a winner, and this one did well. However, it’s got some flaws you might not have noticed much as a kid. First, having a lawyer convicted of DUI coach a kids’ hockey team? And then having him hook up with one of his players’ moms? What’s the message here?
Ace Ventura, Pet Detective
It was funny then and it’s funny now. You probably have some favorite lines and scenes. But now you can see that it’s also pretty dumb.
She’s All That
Dumped by his girlfriend, the most popular guy in school makes a bet that he can take a homely-looking girl and make her popular. Of course, she turns out to be stunning once she gets some “help,” and in the end they fall in love. The movie isn’t so much bad as it is cringey.
Can’t Buy Me Love
Here’s another one that was fun at the time but makes you cringe a little now. Desperate to be popular, a nerdy boy pays the hottest girl in school to pretend to be his girlfriend. It’s all great for him until she spills the secret after her real boyfriend breaks up with her.
Caddyshack
A lot of people would consider it sacrilege to include this gold comedy here, but there’s a case for it. Like a lot of comedies from its era, it starts out hilarious, but somewhere in the second half, the humor starts to get a little old and you’re laughing to laugh, not because it’s funny.
Cruel Intentions
The 1988 Dangerous Liaisons starring John Malkovich, Glenn Close, and Michelle Pfeiffer is a classic of manipulation and betrayal. So why not remake it in 1999 and set it in New York with spoiled, rich high-school kids? That’s why not.
Revenge of the Nerds
Even at the time, there were some disturbing aspects, and the film hasn’t aged well. For starters, there are strong notes of racism, homophobia, and bullying presented as humor. Even worse, though, is the scene near the end where what really is a rape is treated as perfectly okay. She’s even happy about it! Imagine trying that now in a movie.
The Breakfast Club
The most iconic 80s teen film also hasn’t aged well. Some of the scenes are still great, but the film now comes off as almost non-stop bullying and sexual harassment. Sadly, the movie pretty accurately depicts those times, but it does so to entertain, not inform or criticize.
Spy Kids
This movie did great at the box office and launched a franchise, and you can see why kids loved it. But adults watching it now can’t help but shake their heads.
Batman Forever
Audiences loved Michael Keaton as Batman in the first two installments of the original film series, and moviegoers looked forward to seeing such a talented actor as Val Kilmer in the role. However, it just never really comes together.
Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
If you were a kid when this came out, you might have loved it for all the special effects. But as an adult, you’ve maybe come to realize why long-time fans hated it and usually name it as the worst in the series.
