The Top 5 Most Underrated Movies of the Year

The 2024 box office is off to a slow start this year due to last year’s writer’s and actor’s strikes.

As the new films for the new calendar year start to slowly roll out again, what are some of the most underrated movies of 2023 that you might have missed?

Here is my vote for the films you’ll want to catch up on.

As a Generation X movie fan, I’ve seen special effects improve greatly over the years and this fantastic 2023 release has some of the most amazing visuals yet. An epic tale in a futuristic world, it deserved to be seen on the big screen and with so many nuances it needs to be seen more than once.

I’m disappointed that this film didn’t do better at the box office and hope that more movie fans discover it on streaming. The spectacular special effects make the film worth watching on its own and the talented cast brought this sci-fi drama to a whole new level.

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to give it a chance and enjoy it at home. It’s worth the watch and I definitely hope we’ll see more of this universe in the future.

While most slasher horror is bad, Thanksgiving is so bad it is fun.

This 2023 movie release takes a genre that is often ignored or butchered (pun intended) and turns it into a bloody good time for everyone. My teens cracked up at the antics and over-the-top scenes that were filled with laugh-out-loud humor and enough gore to satisfy even hardcore fans.

While I don’t think this film will become a cult classic, it is lots of fun especially for those of us who love cynical and outrageous flicks. We’ve added it to our holiday watch list to serve up more laughs on turkey day in 2024.

The Marvels

Everyone at our house is a Marvel fan, but I admit, we’re feeling superhero fatigue. Between the films and the series, it can be tough to keep up with all of the different aspects, plot lines and multiverses of the different characters.

Sometimes it’s just nice to watch a film I don’t have to have seen a dozen other movies and TV shows to understand.

While it bombed at the box office, The Marvels was pure girl power fun. You did need to know some of the back story including who Monica Rambeau and newcomer Kamala Khan are, however the film is entertaining and easy to follow. Samuel L. Jackson is always a delight as Nick Fury and I’m always game for some Flerken fun.

While I could care less about soccer, this entry on our list of underrated films was a funny and heartfelt true story.

Telling the tale of the notoriously terrible soccer team of American Samoa, this sports drama also dives into friendship, love, loss and more.

It reminds us that sports and games are supposed to be fun and that sometimes we can lose sight of that goal in the process.

The Family Plan

An Apple TV release that really should have been sent to theaters, this hilarious family drama is fun and entertaining for all ages. Mark Wahlberg leads a talented cast as a suburban dad who gave up a life as an assassin for love and family.

As his past history catches up with his current lifestyle, Wahlberg learns more about himself and his family, changing everyone’s trajectory in this fast-paced adventure. With lots of great lessons about pursuing your dreams and being yourself, this fun family film has something for everyone.

As you’re looking for new entertainment to watch at home, these are just a few of the underrated movies from 2023 that you’ll want to check out.
