We all enjoy a good Netflix movie occasionally, but not all are worth watching. Netflix has a vast array of movies in its arsenal. The options are limitless, from sci-fi to romcoms to action-packed thrillers to documentaries. Once you go down this rabbit hole, there’s no coming back.

However, with endless options, it becomes increasingly difficult to decide which films to watch and which to pass. Sometimes, we watch a movie only to find it incredibly dull. This wastes precious time we already don’t have. Knowing which movies are worth the binge is crucial to ensure that doesn’t happen to you.

1. The Beautiful Game (2024)

The Beautiful Game isn’t just a random soccer movie. It’s based on the Homeless World Cup, which brings together displaced people from over 50 countries to shed light on the severity of the issue and give them hope and a second chance at life. Bill Nighy plays Mal, the coach of England’s team who recruits Vinny, played by Michael Ward, who’s living out of his car. While Mal is initially resistant to the idea, he eventually comes around, leading to significant friction in the cup.

2. Society of the Snow (2023)

There are plenty of heartwarming survival films, yet this isn’t for the faint of heart. Society of the Snow is based on the Uruguayan rugby team’s plane crash in the Andes mountains. It highlights the journey of the people who were onboard and how they pulled through. While we don’t want to spoil who survives and who doesn’t, let’s just say you’ll be balling your eyes out. 

3. Shirley (2024)

Based on the first black woman to be elected to Congress and campaign for the Democratic nomination for President, Shirley is a classic historical movie set in 1972. Chisholm realizes she has little support, yet she continues to stand up for her beliefs and hold steadfast in her position, inspiring people of color for many years. This film will ignite a fire in your heart unlike any other.

4. Damsel (2024)

Starring Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie, Damsel starts as a fairytale, making you think that Elodie will eventually fall in love with Prince Henry, the guy she agrees to marry for the sake of her people.

But, things take a turn when Henry’s family throws her in a pit right after the wedding ceremony to pay a century-old debt to a dragon. Filled with twists, turns, and surprises, Damsel is worth watching. 

5. Orion and The Dark (2024)

Orion and The Dark is a phenomenal film that does a great job of humanizing the impossible. The plot centers around Orion, who fears everything, especially the dark. When Dark gets tired of hearing Orion be terrified of him, he introduces himself and thus begins the process of healing.

This movie tugs at your heartstrings because, at its core, it resonates with each of us wanting to feel safe in this vast world.

6. Leave the World Behind (2023)

An adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel Leave the World Behind is a psychological thriller that understands the post-apocalyptic era. Amanda and Clay experience several bizarre incidents at the rental house until the owner and his daughter show up with news of a blackout in the city.

The story is about trusting one another and the tensions that arise as both families try to navigate the crisis of a lifetime.

7. Love at First Sight (2023)

The story centers around Hadley and Oliver, who meet at an airport while waiting for their flight to London, where they connect on a deeper level during their overseas trip. Love at First Sight is a classic Netflix rom-com that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster as the protagonists part ways without closure. They eventually realize they want to give their love a chance to blossom, reuniting them further in the movie.

8. Nimona (2023)

Animated movies hold a special place in our hearts, but Nimona is one of the best, combining exciting characters, spectacular storylines, and striking visuals. Chloë Grace Moretz is not your average girl. In fact, she’s a shape-shifter who ends up helping a wanted knight in his attempt to get justice. Nimona’s story teaches us crucial life lessons about what it’s like to be different in a world that despises it. 

9. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Taking place in Italy during the Second World War, Pinocchio has mind-blowing stop-motion animation that will keep you hooked. Geppetto loses a son in the war, and in an attempt to deal with his loss, he tries to make a puppet named Pinocchio, who is brought to life by the Wood Sprite. The narrative is about finding yourself in a world full of endless possibilities. 

10. The Good Nurse (2022)

We’ve all watched tons of films starring serial killers and their morbid stories, but none of them relate to the human experience like The Good Nurse. This realistic story is about a nurse who wants to hide the fact that she has cardiomyopathy to save her career. Her new friend, Charles Cullen, helps her keep this secret, and they develop a bond. But little does she know that he’s involved in multiple disappearances. 

11. All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

While most war movies tend to glorify war, All Quite on the Western Front shows it how it is: gruesome, heart-wrenching, and ugly. Teenagers Paul Bäumer, Albert Kropp, and Ludwig Behm join the armed forces to become heroes of war heroes. However, as the film unfolds, they perish a heartbreaking end depicting that war is anything but pretty. 

12. The Sea Beast (2022)

Netflix tends to produce some fantastic animated movies, and The Sea Beast is up there. In the story, the oceans are filled with monsters, and Captain Jacob Holland and his crew are some of the best at eradicating them. Jacob inspires an orphan girl named Maisie Brumble, who ends up on his ship. In a series of events, they end up on an island where Masie’s compassion shows the captain a different perspective. 

13. Tick, Tick… BOOM! (2021)

Tick Tick Boom pays homage to Broadway musicals and the creators behind them. This film is a  musical about making a musical and gives insight into what it’s like to try to make it on Broadway. As the big day of release approaches, you’ll be sitting on the edge of the seat, waiting to see what else can go wrong for Jon. 

14. The Power of the Dog (2021)

Benedict Cumberbatch is the main protagonist of The Power of the Dog, and his stellar acting hits home. Phil Burbank is shown to be going through a masculinity crisis, wanting to be the toughest man out of everyone. He and his brother meet Rose, the widowed proprietress of a local inn. While his brother falls in love with the woman, Phil’s cruelty and behavior towards her and her son cause tensions among the brothers.

15. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

The Trial of Chicago 7 is a masterpiece that will keep you hooked throughout the movie. Based on the 1968 protests and the 1969 trial for men suspected of inciting those riots, this film is an epic saga that compellingly tackles a high-intensity topic. The movie follows seven people who were charged with anti-American activities and conspiracy by the federal government and how they built their case.  

16. The Irishman (2019)

Coming in with a whopping 209-minute amalgamation of crime, violence, history, and phenomenal acting and execution is The Irishman. The storyline centers around Frank Sheeran, a World War II combat veteran who became a hitman for the gangster Jimmy Hoffa. Standing on a precipice between American Mafia culture, history, and politics, The Irishman is worth every minute.

17. Okja (2017)

Okja is a genuinely heartwarming narrative about a young girl, Mija, and her mutant pig. The Mirando corporation develops a “super pig” that is sent to farms for ten years to mature. After this time is up, they come back to collect the mutant pig, but Mija takes off to prevent that from happening. While the story seems simple, it highlights crucial animal cruelty and corporate responsibility topics. 

18. The King (2019)

Starring Timothee Chalamet as the Prince of Wales, The King is about the prince’s ascension to the throne. While Hal, the prince, has no interest in becoming the leader, he is forced to become King after his father’s demise. The movie makes history accessible to the new generation through a visually gripping medieval picture and charismatic actors that make the film stand out.
