12 Movies That People See as Masterpieces Even if Critics Down Agree

Do you have a movie that you don’t just love, but consider to be absolute perfection? Well these folks do, and they shared these movies that people see as masterpieces – even though they’re not considered as such by the mainstream.

The big problem with movies is that they’re subjective. So just because critics didn’t call a movie a masterpiece (plenty of good films get overlooked!) doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of the title.

Here’s some strong contenders to be added to the list.

Tremors

Very iconic movie here! Not only is Tremors entertaining, but it’s also very well written, paced, and acted too. While yes, many people do love this film, it didn’t win any awards when it came out and was largely overlooked by critics.

Pleasantville

A top tier film in my books, Pleasantville seems to have been left in the 90s despite being pretty unique in both style and story. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire, Pleasantville is about a pair of siblings who enter a 1950s black and white television show and slowly corrupt it.

OK, most folks now agree that this movie is awesome but it was definitely overlooked when it came out. How did that happen, exactly? Simple: it was released the same year as The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King that absolutely dominated the Oscars. There was no chance.

A Knight’s Tale

One of my childhood favorites but a quick search shows pretty mixed reviews for this 2001 film. I think the problem with this movie was the marketing: it looks like a romantic film rather than the action comedy that it is.

“Personally I think it is incredible and critics were exceptionally harsh to it.” the person who suggested that A Knight’s Tale is a masterpiece argued.

Children of Men

It’s not that this movie isn’t a beloved masterpiece by critics and fans, it’s that it never really entered the mainstream despite being so good. Ask a bunch of people if they’ve seen it – if your circle isn’t a bunch of sci-fi fans I’ll bet there will be few who have.

I recently felt the need to re-watch this one and let me just say that I appreciate it so much more as an adult than I did as a kid. It truly is a masterpiece in both sci-fi satire and homage to the genre. Especially if you’re a Star Trek fan.

The biggest problem was likely that it was a Tim Allen movie but less “family comedy” and more “movie for grown ups”, which made it hard to find its audience at the time.

Rogue One

As a Star Wars fan I of course enjoyed Rogue One but totally agree that it’s often overlooked as a great movie in the franchise. Yes, it’s a spinoff – but it’s well written and super entertaining to watch.

Lake Placid

There are so many reasons to love Lake Placid that also make it a cinematic masterpiece. First of all, the story is great – including the “twist” ending that subverts the viewers’ expectations. Plus the cast, which includes the iconic Betty White, does a great job of selling the suspense.

Dazed and Confused

This one is written off far too often as just a stoner movie despite doing so much more with the story. Apart from being fun to watch, Dazed and Confused does a great job of connecting generations together in a common age: the teenage years.

The Fifth Element

What’s very telling about The Fifth Element not getting the credit it deserved during its 1997 release is the difference between old and new reviews of this sci-fi film. At the time, critics didn’t really enjoy the blend of science fiction, comedy, and action – but modern fans see it for the gem that it is.

Looper

Another overlooked sci-fi film that people see as a masterpiece, Looper is about a future where the mob uses time travel to assassinate people in the past. On paper it sounds kind of cheesy but the result is a film that’s gripping and enjoyable.

Of course, not everyone agrees; some say that Looper is full of plot holes. I’ll let you decide!

I do think a lot of people recognize that Clue was a great movie, but we seem to overlook it when we talk about classics of that era. If you liked Knives Out you should ignore all the bad reviews for Clue out there and check this masterpiece out.
