12 Popular Movies Pushed on Reddit That Were Disappointing When We Finally Watched Them

If you’ve ever gone online, then you’ve probably seen countless “best movie ever” lists. Well, a popular place people go for film recommendations is Reddit – a few titles come up most often. They’re not for everyone, though; here are some popular movies pushed on Reddit that were disappointing when folks finally saw them.

It’s possible that some of these films are on your “to-watch list.” Maybe take a pause and make sure each one is for you before giving in to the hype.

I often see both the movie and TV series recommended online but not everyone enjoyed this film when they finally checked it out.

“The whole movie feels like an overstretched SNL skit.” the commentator said. Others agreed, and some added that comedy (especially satire or comedy horror) is really hard to recommend because it’s not for everyone.

Aquaman

I was surprised to see this one since I thought that most people had a negative opinion of this Jason Momoa film – at least that’s how it was in my circles.

“I’m very confused by how many people here seem to have genuinely enjoyed Aquaman.” a Redditor commented. Others added that it’s just very polarizing; either you like it or you don’t.

Black Panther

It was unique and definitely a solid Marvel flick, but is it as good as everyone says? Some people don’t think so.

One comment tried to explain their point of view, saying “I get the social significance. But I thought it was a decent action flick, that’s all.” Others weren’t so nice and said it wasn’t a good movie at all.

I actually finally watched this one earlier today so it’s fresh in my memory. I thought it totally lived up to the hype, but apparently not everyone felt the same way.

“I’m the only person I’ve ever met that did not enjoy Parasite” one person said, but a lot of people upvoted or replied in agreement. Others didn’t mind the film but felt it was simply overrated.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Woah woah woah, this movie isn’t just loved by Reddit but by most critics too. So what did people dislike about it, you ask? For some it was just too zany, which made it a lot less enjoyable for folks who wanted something more serious.

Nomadland

My favorite response to this suggestion was this comment: “Exactly, if I wanted to watch old ladies struggle living I’d go to my family reunion.”

Yikes.

Anyway, Nomadland is a movie about a woman in her 60s who lost everything in the Great Recession and then took her RV on a cross-country trip. It was good enough to be nominated for an Academy Award but that doesn’t mean this one’s everyone’s cup of tea.

La La Land

If you don’t like musicals then that’s already a sign you won’t enjoy La La Land. But even some people who do like them still feel this movie is overhyped on the internet.

In concept, La La Land is a throwback film to those big Hollywood musical blockbuster movies. In practice, though, they hired famous actors rather than singers/dancers and it shows.

Dune

The consensus on this one is that the majority of people who love and recommend the Dune movies (both old and new ones) are folks who already like the book series. If you weren’t already familiar with the source material the movie, especially the new one, might feel lacking or even boring as a science fiction film.

This horror film is often recommended when people are looking for something really scary but not everyone gets creeped out by it in the same way its fans do. This is especially true if you’re not a fan of found footage/mockumentary style horror films.

I like the song Jack Black sings but after watching a bit of this with my kids I can totally see how some folks found it disappointing. Cute, yes, but for these adults it seemed like a bunch of nostalgia packed together with actors that didn’t feel right for their roles.

Snowpiercer

A real controversial take here! It seems like everyone online loves Snowpiercer so if you didn’t care for it take comfort in finally knowing that, unlike the folks on that train, you’re not alone.

Oppenheimer

The real issue with Oppenheimer hate is that people went into it thinking it was a movie about the Manhattan Project when in reality it was a biopic of Oppenheimer’s life. As such, a significant part of the movie was what happened after the bomb was made – which left some viewers disappointed and even bored with the film.

Do you have a movie that you don’t just love, but consider to be absolute perfection? Well these folks do, and they shared these movies that people see as masterpieces – even though they’re not considered as such by the mainstream.

The big problem with movies is that they’re subjective. So just because critics didn’t call a movie a masterpiece (plenty of good films get overlooked!) doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of the title.
