The 12 Worst TV Show Finales Ever (Warning: Spoilers)

We wanted to know what TV shows had the worst endings ever made, and thankfully folks online didn’t hold back with their suggestions. These aren’t just TV shows with disappointing or cliffhanger endings: most of them ended downright stupid.

That doesn’t mean the shows were awful (although some are), but it does mean that if you were planning to watch one of these series you might want to keep the ending in mind… Because if it’s on this list, it’s one of the TV shows with the worst endings out there.

Spoilers… Obviously.

ALF

ALF ’s ending has to be a joke, right? It was a funny show, so naturally the ending should be the government taking ALF away to get experimented on. Because that makes sense, right?

I guess this was supposed to be a cliffhanger but the show got cancelled – and that’s made ALF ’s finale go down in history as one of the worst TV show endings of all time.

The X-Files

At some point during the series the X-Files became a kind of “monster of the week” show, which meant that the plot had very little, if no, continuity.

The show could have just ended but instead they decided to do a supercut episode trying to tie everything together and it didn’t work. Like at all. So many plot holes and contradictions.

My Name Is Earl

This is one that was cancelled too early and left fans on a major cliffhanger. Spoiler incoming: Earl finds out that Dodge is his child. Woah! But we never see what happens or see him complete his list, which makes this a terrible ending to a TV series.

We kind of get closure in Raising Hope, but it’s still disappointing.

Pretty Little Liars

This is a great example of bad writing and series planning. Apparently, the creator didn’t even know how the show would end which set the series up for disappointment at the start.

Heroes

You’d think we’d be more afraid of writing strikes after what happened to Heroes during the TV writer strike of 2007 but here we are. Anyway, Heroes is terrible after season 1 and the ending offered no redemption.

Game of Thrones

This will go down as one of the worst endings in TV show history. Since the books aren’t finished, it’s hard to say how the story was actually supposed to wrap up, but considering George R. R. Martin worked on the show it’s not clear if the books will wind up any better.

Dexter

We’re talking about the original series here, not the reboot – although some say that ending is terrible too. Again, spoilers, but basically the final (extremely rushed) episode killed off Dexter’s sister and Dexter escaped his arrest off the coast in his boat.

Sherlock (BBC)

I’m pretty sure this show comes up every time anyone has a discussion around the worst TV show ending ever. The thing about Sherlock is that it had so much going for it. Great writing at the start, great actors, a clever plot… Unfortunately the writer wrote himself into a corner and left everyone disappointed by the series ending.

How I Met Your Mother

What’s ironic about How I Met Your Mother’s ending is that the series opens with the ending. The whole thing is about getting us to that point – and for the first while, it definitely keeps us on the hook.

After all those seasons of build up, though, what actually transpired retroactively ruined the show for many fans. It could have ended perfectly by retracting exactly where it started Instead we get a cut forward to the future. Let’s just say, it’s bad.

Star Trek Enterprise

Fans felt like this one provided no closure to the series, especially since the show was otherwise good. Even worse, one of the main characters was killed off for no reason!

Gossip Girl

The whole point of Gossip Girl is trying to figure out who Gossip Girl is. When we finally find out, well, let’s just say it’s one of the worst TV show endings out there.

The 100

Besides all the criticisms you can make about how the events leading up to the ending came to pass (suspend your disbelief there), the actual ending to The 100 was just plain dumb. The characters choose not to transcend into paradise, but instead live out on Earth. Not sure why.
