The 12 Best Written TV Shows You Can Watch Now

Running out of streaming options or not sure what to pick with so many choices? If you need a great TV show to watch these 12 options are fantastic – especially if you enjoy a series with really good writing.

These would be perfect options for fans of popular shows like Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and so on.

White Lotus

This is one of the best new shows out there so if you haven’t checked out White Lotus yet you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s a dark-comedy anthology series, meaning each episode is a self contained story, and it’s so good.

The Wire

An older show, The Wire was created by a former police reporter which makes it more realistic than most crime serials. If you missed it when it aired you can check out the full series on HBO Max or Crave.

Succession

Another HBO series (they have so many great and well written TV shows to watch!), Succession wrapped up its final season in May of 2023. That just means it’s a great candidate for binge watching!

The Haunting of Hill House

A one-season miniseries, this Netflix show does a great job of retelling the book of the same name. If you like horror and great TV shows, you’re going to love this one.

Chernobyl

Speaking of miniseries, another one to binge is HBO’s Chernobyl if you haven’t already watched it. Since coming out in 2019 Chernobyl has been regarded as one of the best TV series of all times by fans.

Derry Girls

The best show you’ve never heard of, Derry Girls is set in Ireland during The Troubles and blends that drama with some of the best comedy writing you can get in a TV show.

Shameless

There’s a lot of debate as to which Shameless is better: the US or UK version. One thing everyone agrees, though, is that whichever you watch will be a great TV show through all 11 seasons – a rare thing to see for a show that aired for this long.

Black Sails

Another great option if you want to watch a longer TV show, Black Sails is set during the golden age of pirates and includes several real-life pirates fictionalized in the show. If you appreciate the era and enjoy period dramas, definitely add Black Sails to your watch list.

Everyone who’s watched this show says it’s good so it’s about time you take their advice… Especially if you’re a fan of Pedro Pascal!

Alice in Borderland

I’ll be honest with you – I’m never sure what to expect when it comes to J-Dramas. Thanks to Squid Game, we’re now more receptive to these shows than ever and Alice in Borderland is probably the perfect choice for anyone desperate for Squid Game season 2.

It’s essentially the same idea: a bunch of people find themselves in a game where they have to compete to survive. Only this game is set on the empty streets of Tokyo.

Black Mirror

The only negative thing about checking out Black Mirror is that it can be really hard to binge watch because each episode is so heavy. Still, if you love a dark, well-written show, this one’s for you.

Ted Lasso

Something a little different, Ted Lasso starts off as a silly “fish out of water” style comedy before finding its footing as a comedy-drama. Each episode is carefully written to be funny and poignant, while the overarching series story ends by wrapping up each character in a satisfying way. Overall, Ted Lasso is a satisfying show to watch even if you missed it at the height of its popularity.
